Buddhist texts offer vivid portrayals of hell realms, contrasting sharply with the serene imagery of meditation typically associated with Buddhism in the West. The Deuta Sutra, an early Pali Canon text, introduces the concept of hell, featuring a narrative where a wicked man faces Yama, the king of hell, who questions his awareness of Buddhist teachings. Unlike Christianity's eternal punishment, Buddhist hell serves as a temporary state for karmic purification, enabling rebirth into more favorable realms after enduring suffering.

Some Buddhist texts even depict Yama compassionately, emphasizing that hell’s gruesome imagery is not intended as a desirable outcome. This notion is reflected in various cultural practices, such as the Ghost Festival in China, where families offer food to monks to alleviate the suffering of ancestors in hell. The festival's roots lie in the story of Mulan, a monk who ventures into hell to save his mother, highlighting filial piety alongside Buddhist teachings.

In Thailand, figures like Prai undertake similar journeys to the underworld, using their meditative abilities to observe karma and return with vital lessons. These narratives, including Mulan’s and Prai’s, demonstrate how Buddhism has integrated local cultural values, adapting its teachings to resonate within different societies, particularly in East Asia. Through these stories, the complexities of Buddhist cosmology continue to influence and educate communities about moral conduct and the significance of Buddhist practice.
