While Godzilla Minus One made waves in how it took the series back to its roots, becoming the highestgrossing Japanese film in North America and nabbing a Best VFX Oscar to boot, the recent success and outpour of love for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire shows that combination of Minus One, Monarch, and the increasing popularity of the Monsterverse means that Godzilla has finally been embraced in its totality in the West. What was once misunderstood Kaiju film series primarily targeted towards younger audiences, has finally clicked with mainstream audiences in a way past Godzilla films haven't.

Godzilla x Kong proves this by being a psychedelic throwback to the absurdity of the Showa Era. Director Adam Wingard channels his childhood influences to create a film that feels nostalgic, but doesn't harp on nostalgia instead using that feeling as a means to create new fans by doing something most legacy franchises seldom do: appeal to kids. GxK feels like an exception in the modern blockbuster landscape, the rare franchise film that doesn’t seem to be prioritizing its adult fans. Instead, it feels like a movie made for kids, and I mean that as a MASSIVE compliment. This is the kind of Godzilla movie I dreamed of as a 10yearold boy, brimming with imaginative setpieces, and vibrant sets and bizarre creations… the kind of stuff that would inspire a kid to go home and play with their toys. The film opens with a montage of Godzilla squaring off against a murders’ row of gnarlylooking creatures, and that momentum never falters. This is the kind of movie where Kong and Godzilla have a zerogravity brawl with a sadistic red ape dictator and his mythical frost dragon at the center of the earth. Director Adam Wingard’s top priority was clearly to make sure every kid in the theater had the time of their life for 115 minutes, and at the end of the day, is there any purer distillation of Shōwa era Godzilla than that?
