Why I now strongly recommend AGAINST buying a Mercedes Sprinter

Nick C.

I am now facing yet another Diesel Exhaust Fluid system failure. The previous three NOX sensor replacements were covered under the extended warranty. Now that my warranty has expired, I am facing potentially unlimited out of pocket expenses going forward, as I have no confidence that Mercedes will have finally fixed the issue this time since they have been unable to reliably fix the same issue since the problem reappeared after each of the previous three attempts.

What it looks like was that there was a more significant problem with the CAT and DPF at least during one of the previous inwarranty repair attempts. But since my warranty expired in January, I am now expected to pay for yet another thorough diagnosis and repair.

I used to strongly recommend the Sprinter van to all of my cyclist and outdoorsy friends. For the reason above, I am now going to start recommending that they DO NOT go with Mercedes and instead consider a Ford Transit.

UPDATE: 16 JUL 2021 (*THIS THING STILL SUCKS*): Countdown process has started again. MBSD did the scan and said that I have a faulty DEF sensor...AGAIN (and I had this sensor replaced already not long ago at an outofpocket expense of several thousand dollars).

And MBSD says that in order to gain access to the defective (again) sensor, it requires the full REMOVAL and REINSTALLATION of the gray, black, and fresh water tanks, which I have to pay out of pocket for. The current quote from the RV dealer/service center they recommend was $2,000 for the removal and reinstallation of the tanks and the RV service center can't get to it until sometime later this year since I didn't buy my motorhome from them.

I now have 14 starts remaining. I suppose I just leave it running until...November?

Joking, however isn't it ironic* that I am leaving my Sprinter running all day for the next few days due to a system that was supposed to reduce the exhaust emissions...

Shout out to Mercedes for helping me get so many views on this video!

*I am literally asking because Alanis Morissette forever ruined my generation's ability to accurately distinguish between irony and coincidence...
