I can tell you firsthand that many youngsters in India destroy their lives appearing and reappearing for the UPSC Civil Services Exam.

On a daily basis, my inbox is filled with so many stories of those who lost their 20s revising, and rerevising the same books.

That’s NOT how you should live your 20s. You can’t throw away the most productive years of your lives on the lanes of Old Rajendra Nagar just because you couldn’t clear an exam on your first attempt.


There’s no doubt that clearing the UPSC exam is a sureshot way for upward social mobility in India. But what if things DO NOT work out? Statistically speaking, 99% of people fail in this examination.


And once you fail in this exam, the sunk cost fallacy kicks in wherein you’d continue to prepare full time for this exam year after year because getting a job is not easy after gap years.


My advice has always been do not take multiple gap years to appear/reappear for these exams. Give all your might in the first attempt, and if for some reason things do not fall in line take up a job. (And then you can use that job to pivot into your desired careers in a few years details in links below).


You can still reappear for this exam but please do it along with a job.
