This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. James Deakin is a Filipino born to a Filipina and a British man. He spent grew up in the Philippines, before leaving at age 14 to migrate to Australia. He came back 12 years, became a DJ, drank a lot of beer; and eventually joined a group of guys to set up a car enthusiast magazine, which led to a gig hosting a TV show called Auto Extreme in 2002; and then a weekly column in the Philippine STAR’s motoring section. All these conspired to prepare him to deliver this surprisingly personal, revealing and inspirational talk about how to get people to give to charity.

James Deakin hosts currently a radio show and a weekly podcast about cars. He is also the man responsible for organizing "Operation Hatid", a volunteerdriven initiative that enabled thousands of families who lost their homes to find comfort and solace in the arms of relatives and loved ones in the aftermath of supertyphoon Haiyan.
