Little India today is one of Singapore’s most vibrant districts, with a fascinating past that stretches back to the 19th century.

Serangoon Road —the historic heart of the district— was once called Soonambu Kamban (Village of Lime in Tamil) for its lime pits. Over the decades, the district evolved into an area of commerce, with rattan works, wheatgrinding sheds and pineapple factories emerging alongside cattle trade.

As you walk through this bustling neighbourhood, you’ll find places of worship with beautiful architecture and interiors, from the Corinthian pillars of the Abdul Gafoor Mosque to the fifteenmetretall Buddha statue in the Temple of a Thousand Lights.

Of particular note is the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Built by Indian pioneers in the 19th century, the temple is dedicated to the worship of the fearsome goddess Kali and is home to statues that date back to the 1930s.

A world of sights, sounds and tastes await travellers as they explore Little India’s myriad attractions.

Foodies will find a melting pot of traditional flavours at restaurants like Indian Express and Bismillah Biryani. Gourmands in the search of bold new flavours should also check out The Malayan Council, Old Hen Coffee Bar and The Whisky Library & Jazz Club.

If you’re in the mood for a shopping spree, you’ll find wondrous wares — from sweets and spices to jewellery— at the Little India Arcade, while 24hour shopping mall Mustafa Centre offers everything from electronics to groceries.

Little India’s streets are named after its 19thcentury residents: Dunlop Street, for an European family, Belilios Lane, for cattle importer I.R. Belilios, and Campbell Lane for British soldier Sir Colin Campbell

जो भारतीय लिटिल इंडिया से दूर रहते है वे अपनी घरेलू ज़रूरतों की खरीदारी करते हुए, यहाँ आमतौर पर दिख जाते है. सिंगापुर की छोटी सी आबादी का 9.2 फीसदी हिस्सा भारतीय समुदाय का है. सिंगापुर में 19वी सदी की शुरुआत से वे यहाँ बसना शुरू हो गए थे.

सिंगापुर के लिटिल इंडिया में भारतीय शैली के खानपान की चीजों की कोई कमी नहीं है. डोसा, इडली, समोसा और कड़क चाय आपको हर रेस्टोरेंट पर मिल जाएगी. साथ ही आपको यहाँ भारत में स्थित कई मशहूर होटल चेन भी मिलेगें.

वैसे तो भारतीय यहां पर गुलाम बनाकर लाए गए थे मगर अब यहाँ इनको बराबरी का हक है. सिंगापुर में बोले जाने वाली चार मुख्य भाषाओ में से एक है तमिल. लिटिल इंडिया में आपको हर कोने मे दक्षिण भारत के लोग नज़र आएंगे. दुकानदार, होटल वाला, टैक्सी ड्राईवर आदि.

सिंगापुर के इस इलाके का मुख्य आकर्षण है इसका दिन रात खुला रहने वाला एक विशाल मॉल. इस विशाल मॉल में आप जो चाहेंगे, मिलेगा. भारतीय कंपनियों से लेकर विदेशी कंपनियों का ब्रांडेड सामान भी और वह भी उचित दाम पर. सिंगापुर आने वाले ज्यादातर सैलानी समय और पैसा बचाने के लिए इसी मॉल में शौपिंग करते है. कारण है की ये दिन रात खुला रहता है
