While many were underwhelmed by Rami Malek's Safin in No Time To Die (myself included on first watch), I believe that there's much more to Lyutsifer Safin than meets the eye. No Time To Die is a story about Bond discovering something more than his violent occupation as 007 with MI6. It's about James Bond discovering something to live for and subsequently, something to die for, and naturally, when you're dealing with a film that's putting the emotional core of the story front and center as opposed to the plot, you're going to want a villain that contrasts our hero on an emotional, philosophical level which Rami Malek's Safin does. He's all of the negative traits that plague Daniel Craig's Bond throughout the film bottled into one entity. He is the mirror image of our protagonist, but not physically or by way of occupation like an Alec Trevelyan or Francisco Scaramanga, rather he's more psychological; he's Bond in the head vs. in the body which is very much in line with the state of the Daniel Craig James Bond movies. No Time to Die might not give you what you thought you were going to get in terms of a Bond villain, what with his big lair and megalomaniac scheme a la Dr. No. He never really becomes that: he is the villain, but he’s not typical in the way he’s portrayed. The focus of a Bond film, usually, is the villain’s plot. Even in a film like Casino Royale, or Skyfall, which are more characterfocused, the plot is still a huge focus. No Time to Die is never really about Safin’s plot or the mechanics behind it. Maybe in the first half, there’s a bit of that, particularly in Cuba, but it’s almost like, once Safin kills Blofeld and has the weapon, it doesn’t matter what he does with it now. He has it, and the stakes have been laid. That allows the plot to take a backseat to what No Time to Die is REALLY about: James Bond finding a larger purpose than spy work, a larger purpose that Safin attempts to take away from him, but fails miserably at doing. Now that's not to say the specifics of Safin's plan or the plot isn't there because it most certainly is, the filmmakers just opted to prioritize the emotional core over the plot which is atypical for a Bond film. About No Time To Die

James Bond is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica after leaving active service. However, his peace is shortlived as his old CIA friend, Felix Leiter, shows up and asks for help.
