Through the turmoil of evermodernising battlefields in the 20th Century, it was not uncommon for soldiers to turn to various rituals or superstitions as a coping mechanism. By wearing protective talismans, lucky charms, or even by avoiding certain activities or actions that apparently spelled misfortune, soldiers believed that they if only minutely had control over their own destinies.
