Why Was Socrates Executed - A Brief Summary of The Trial and Death of Socrates | Greek Philosophy

Socrates is widely regarded as the father of Western Philosophy. He left behind teachings such as "The only true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing" and "The unexamined life is not worth living". As to how Socrates was as a person and a citizen, he is described by Plato as "the wisest and justest, and the best man I have ever known". This would make one think that Socrates must have been highly regarded and valued in ancient Athens. But as it turns out, that wasn't really the case. Not only was he not regarded, but the democratic government of Athens considered Socrates to be a threat to its democracy. And this made them put Socrates on trial and sentence him to death by drinking poison. Needless to say, this raises some questions: Why was Socrates accused? What was Socrates accused of? Why was Socrates put on trial and executed? Was the trial of Socrates fair?
