Why We Get Stuck in 'Not So Bad' Situations: The Region Beta Paradox

Have you ever found yourself stuck in an unfulfilling job or a relationship that you wanted to leave but for some reason didn’t? Perhaps you found yourself thinking “it’s not that bad” or “things could be worse.”

Why is it that we only act to improve things once they reach a particular threshold of badness? Psychologist Daniel Gilbert coined the term ‘Regionbeta paradox’ to explain why we’re sometimes better off when we’re worse off.
