The U.S. Military adopted the M14 Battle Rifle in 1958 and it would serve as the standard service rifle up until 1964, when it was replaced (gradually). A lot of veterans give credit to its ability and ruggedness, even though in wasn't best suited for the jungle environment. It's use in Vietnam would be limited after 1965, but It would still continue service, as a Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) and rifle for training units. It is an accurate, semiauto rifle that fires the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge and would see use in Iraq and Afghanistan due to its longer range capability. In this video we go over some of the history behind the M14 and why the M1A is such a great historical representation of the M.14. Some people even say the M1A is the muscle car of rifles.

There are not many of these rifles left over as military surplus. Many of them were destroyed or are still in service. Only civilian versions are available.
