Why Your 3D Printed Threads Don't Work

Follow
GoEngineer

There are often times when I want to have my FDM 3D printed parts screw together in some way, but the threads created by SOLIDWORKS' builtin thread feature don’t usually work well when 3D printed; they often stick and bind, and usually require a lot of support material. In this short video, I’ll show you a few tricks I discovered to make 3Dprinted thread work beautifully.

First, we tackle using the thread feature in SOLIDWORKS. The SOLIDWORKS Thread Tool is a great starting point, but we'll make some modifications. Next, we'll create the negative, a custom nut for our design so that the threads can hold something in place. Finally, we'll discuss the orientation of the model and how it affects the 3D print.
