At their isolated mission outpost in China in 1949, Catholic priests O'Banion and Bovard endure severe harassment from the Communist People's Party. Siu Lan, the mission's lovely Chinese female chef, is a source of further stress for Father O'Banion as she openly expresses her love for him.

Leo McCarey's final film, Satan Never Sleeps (1962), is an American drama romantic war film that revisits the religious themes of his masterpieces Going My Way (1944) and The Bells of St. Mary's (1945). The film is sometimes referred to as The Devil Never Sleeps and Flight from Terror. It's also actor Clifton Webb's last onscreen appearance.
