Cris&Cale

We traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina’s port city and ate at The Basics, the Original Salt Works, Cheesesmith, Indochine, and Ceviche's. Wilmington provides the gateway to Cape Fear beaches such as Wrightsville, Kure, and Carolina. And with their own variety of attractions, boutiques and restaurants, it is easy to see why Wilmington was voted America’s Best Riverfront by USA Today. It is here that we ran in the enjoyable Wrightsville Beach Valentine 5K, where we found Jordan and Joella on the podium for finishing in the top 3 of their age class. We visited the nearby Shark Tooth Island, a small manmade feature accessible by kayak where explorers can find sea biscuits, a more plump version of sand dollars, pottery shards and, you guessed it, shark’s teeth.

The Basics
The Basics is situated in historic downtown’s north end and serves up creative versions of traditional Southern dishes. They make everything from scratch and cook everything to order, but it is their creativity that keeps customers coming back for more. Their weekend brunch menu brings guests some new musttry dishes and makes this a premier brunch destination in Wilmington.

Salt Works
The Original Salt Works has been a local favorite for 50 years, serving up traditional breakfasts and lunches. Their homey location is small and they are cashonly, but their fresh ingredients, personal service, and spoton execution make them a worthwhile choice. Whether you are wearing church clothes or a swimsuit, one visit and you will find why “regulars” keep coming back here for more.

Cheesesmith
Cheesesmith spent three years as a local food truck and now has gone brickandmortar in Wilmington’s buzzing Cargo District. As the name implies, this eatery specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches, creating chefinspired versions of this traditional comfort food. Casual counter service is combined with craft beers and wines in a spot where this lunch outlet is sure to be a staple for many years.

Indochine
Indochine is Wilmington’s premier Asian restaurant serving up an extensive list of ThaiVietnamese dishes in a fancy but fun setting with a vast array of outdoor gardens and dinner huts. Although their mass appeal has taken the edge off “Thai hot” and oversweetened their cocktails, their “nutriceutical” emphasis is a welcomed theme, combining nutrition and health benefits to create a unique holistic dining experience.

Ceviche’s
Ceviche is a casual Panamanian restaurant with an emphasis on seafood and tropical cuisine as it serves up sustainable Latininspired fare and coastalinspired cocktails. The food and decor communicate a vibe that is perfect for a foodie surfer. A featured restaurant on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, Guy Fieri sank his teeth into the Ropa Vieja as well as the sancoho soup a perfect sampling of the excellent dishes that Ceviche has to offer.
