Wind turbines left to rot in California

Off Patterson pass road, near Livermore CA, sits the now abandoned Patterson Pass Wind Project. Built in 1985 by EDF Renewables, at it's peak it generated 20.50 MW of power and was in operation until 2014 when it was shut down and abandoned.

Winds in this area can reach very high speeds. Many of the compromised structures have been blown over and lay shattered on the ground. When companies constructed these early wind farms, there was no thought given to demolition once their useful life was over. The result is many of these hulking structures simply left to rot away.

This was a challenging shoot as I was dodging rain clouds and dealing with less than ideal lighting conditions. I also had to be extra careful as the amount of hard to see hazards in this area were many.
