In early 1960s, Israel and Arab countries introduced Mach 2 capable fighters to their air forces. In the Israeli case, it was the iconic French Mirage III. Despite some shortcomings, mainly due to inadequate radar and missiles, the type soon achieved fame in combat. Israeli Mirage III pilots first met their opponents in MiG21s in 1964, but the first encounter that resulted in an air victory took place in July 1966. Tensions between Israel and Syria were high when number four pilot in a Mirage flight, Yoram Agmon spotted two low flying MiG21s over Golan Heights.
