A study in Current Biology reveals that Wolbachia bacteria have manipulated the wasp Encarsia formosa to eliminate its males entirely. Wolbachia is a common type of bacteria found within the cells of most insects and many other arthropods. They are present in insect eggs but not in sperm, allowing only females to transmit them to their offspring. E. formosa wasps are crucial for controlling whiteflies, which are a major agricultural pest.
