Full highlights of the FA Cup 5th Round tie between Wolves and Wrexham at Molineux on 14th February 1981.

Following the appointment of manager John Barnwell in November 1978, Wolves earned the reputation as a very formidable cup team. An FA Cup Semifinal appearance against Arsenal in Barnwell's first season at Wolves was followed a season later with triumph in the League Cup Final against Nottingham Forest on 15th March 1980 (   • Wolves v Nottingham Forest, League Cu...  . Although they struggled in the First Division throughout much of 198081, Wolves salvaged their season with what would ultimately prove to be another lengthy cup run. Having defeated Watford in a home replay in the previous round following a draw at Vicarage Road (   • Watford v Wolves, FA Cup 4th Round, 2...  , Wolves returned to Molineux for the encounter with underdogs Wrexham in front of an attendance of 33,788.

Against Wrexham, Barnwell relied upon his usual core of experienced players, nine of whom featured in the League Cup success the previous season. In addition, talented striker Wayne Clarke (although used in a midfield role against Wrexham) had emerged from the Wolves youth system and made his first team debut in May 1978, while Irish midfielder Hugh Atkinson debuted in Wolves' League Cup winning season.

Although Wrexham had struggled in the lower reaches of the league following their promotion to the Second Division at the end of 197778 season season, they had long been renowned for causing a number of cup upsets; West Ham United had been on the receiving end of such an upset when they were beaten by Wrexham in a 3rd Round replay prior to their 5th Round clash against Wolves. In Dixie McNeil Wrexham possessed a prolific centreforward, while in defence Welsh internationals Joey Jones and goalkeeper Dai Davies had joined Wrexham from Liverpool and Everton respectively.
