The Suffragettes GCSE History Revision

In 19th century Britain, women were not allowed to vote. In 1903, the Women's Social and Political Union (Suffragettes) was formed. The Suffragettes used direct action to campaign for the right to vote. They adopted tactics such as vandalism, arson and hunger strikes to raise attention for their cause. During the First World War, women played a huge role in the war effort. Women took on the jobs of men, and proved they could do the jobs just as well. In 1918, the Representation of the People Act was passed, which granted women over 30 with property the right to vote. In 1928, this was extended to all women.
