In this activity we see that work has to be done against pressure. Tape a balloon to a straw as shown and place it inside a plastic bottle whose mouth has been sealed with plasticine. When we try to inflate the balloon, we find that it can only be inflated slightly. The air sealed inside the bottle cannot escape and contracts as the balloon inflates. Thus, we have to do work not only in inflating the balloon but also to contract the trapped air.
