Working within our clients' pain thresholds | Stu's Corner

Stuart Hinds Academy

This STU`s Corner is dedicated to making sure we check in and make sure we work within our clients pain thresholds, i`m not sure why some therapists still adhere to the Old analogy NO PAIN NO GAIN.
Is it driven by ego or an old misguided myth handed down over the ages?

I share a recent situation that was presented to me in clinic, a client had visited another therapist for calf tightness and because the therapist neglected to acknowledge the clients thresholds they walked out with an Acute tortocollis and presented to me with the Tortocollis .
I was sitting there taking their history in horror and feeling i needed to apologise on behalf of our profession.
As hands on therapists i believe our role is to help improve function and reduce pain/ soreness not create it, the ART in what we do is finding that sweet spot between not working to light and tolerably uncomfortable, THAT IS THE ART IN WHAT WE DO.
Any therapist can find sensitivity and push beyond that is easy and lazy, the true ART is working in a true therapeutic level within our clients thresholds and HELP improve function and reduce soreness/pain.
Sometimes we can breach this and i understand that and that is why its so important to check in, i always ask twice and then follow up with, WOULD YOU TELL ME IF IT ISN`T !!!! At that point you adjust , surely you can feel them starting to guard and resist your pressure, this is our wake up call to adjust, surely the next decision is to back off and find your sweet spot not engage harder and smash the tissue.

I feel we have an obligation to invest in our clients self care.

BE AWESOME AT WHAT YOU DO!
