Marty Jackson served in the United States Army as a pilot and copilot during WWII. He flew the P40 Warhawk, P47 Thunderbolt, B25 Mitchell, and C47 Skytrain. Assigned to the 311th Fighter Squadron, he flew several combat missions, mostly sticking to supporting the infantry by napalm bombing and strafing runs. On Aug. 8, 1945, Jackson led a group of P47s over the city of Nagasaki, Japan the day before the atomic bomb was dropped. They also flew over the city, observing for about 20 minutes, the day after it was dropped, seeing as the only ones who really knew about the radiation were the experts. He was a part of 72 combat missions, dropping over 50 tons of ordnance, and totaling over 215 combat hours.
