The Yak38 was the first Soviet aircraft carrierbased fighter that entered service in 1976 with many special capabilities such as the vertical takeoff and landing, similar to the US F35B. It should be remembered that VTOL technology has been tested by the Soviet Union since the 1950s, with a bizarre test rig called the Turbolet, followed by the Yak36. The Yak36 was a stepping stone to the carrierbased Yak38.
