Yakutsk is the capital of the largest Russian region in terms of territory, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Sakha is the Yakut word for the people and the republic.

The area of Yakutia is 3,000,000 km², and the population is only 1 million, a third of which lives in Yakutsk. If translated from the language of numbers, Yakutia is 5 times larger than Ukraine, the largest European country. Yakutia is the size of India and has 1,340 times more people than Yakutia. If Yakutia becomes a separate country, it will immediately fly into the top 10 and knock Argentina off 8th place.

The majority of Yakuts live in Yakutsk. And also Evens, Evenks, Russians, Buryats and quite a lot of migrants from exSoviet Central Asia everyone understands Russian and almost everyone speaks it fluently. Among themselves, Yakuts mostly speak Yakut. And in general, the language is absolutely alive: newspapers and other media, signs, cinema, voices in transport and songs of punk bands Yakut will be around you all the time.
