The Yankee Boy Basin drive to the Sneffels trail head is a great driving adventure and I called Rich Pringle to ask if he was interested and it was an immediate YES! Then we found out that Kate’s Place in Ridgway was open the day we planned to make the drive, so we got started with a great breakfast.

Rich likes to drive and has a 4X4 short wheel base Jeep. It rained all day prior to the day of our journey, and we encountered water in many areas and some instances, a stream running down the road. We had a clear day and got some great video and images.

Yankee Boy Basin is an 18.6 mile drive starting in Ouray, Colorado and takes you to an elevation of 12,526 feet at the top at the base of Sneffels Peak. The road can be a little scary if you are afraid of heights.
Rich and I have hiked together for over a decade all over the San Juan’s and southern Utah, so this trip was like old times. I called this “The Journey” because adventures are one continuous journey.

The round trip took us about 6 hours. As was our tradition, we had to stop for ice cream at Panny’s in Ridgway.
