With enough motivation and ingenuity you can come up with scabbard designs and methods that allow you to carry a sword on your back and draw it from there. In history that was done... almost never. There are a few bits of evidence here and there, but it's definitely exceptional.
Would it be a good idea in practical terms, for either historical warriors or fantasy adventurers? Personally I don't think so, and here are my reasons why.
