Yoga Sequence Targeting Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome occurs when the the piriformis (the small muscle beneath the glutes) gets inflamed (from injury, overuse or even prolonged sitting) and begins to put pressure on the sciatic nerve, a nerve which travels down the back of the leg. As a result, the symptoms can be anything from numbness in the buttocks, to pain in the ankle—and everything in between.

Sciatica is a related condition in which the sciatic nerve is compressed in the lower back by a herniated disc. Because both conditions involved the impingment of the sciatic nerve, piriformis syndrome creates sciatic nerve problems, but it is easier to treat through both stretching and strengthening the muscle.

This 35minute yoga sequence covers the whole body, with special focus on strengthening and stretching all the hip stabilizers (the glutes and the piriformis). It also works into the hamstrings, whose tightness can exacerbate pirifomis syndrome. Practicing the poses in this sequence helps alleviate sciatic pain as well as act as a preventative against developing piriformis syndrome in the first place.

Those with severe or chronic sciatic issues may want to visit a doctor or physiotherapist. A regimen of yoga can help ease the symptoms. It takes patience and wisdomoverdoing it can exacerbate the condition.
