Training is challenging, and it can drive us to be competitive with ourselves and others. This is fine as long as you recognize it and don’t let your ego get the best of you. Too much ego in your training can lead to unrealistic programs, doing too much, going too hard, getting injured, sacrificing form, poor technique and poor results over the long run. To fight this, you actively need to approach your training with humility; keeping your ego in check so as to prevent it from hijacking your objectivity and taking your training in a direction that isn’t productive. Ego is one reason why many feel they are beyond the basics. It can be humbling to be challenged by basics done well. The truth is we never outgrow the fundamentals; this doesn’t mean that they are ALL you should do, but an honest attempt to master them is key to long term success m, regardless of your health and fitness goals.
