Zebra Finch Birds in a Homemade Indoor Aviary

Follow
BIRD TV

A group of Zebra Finches who were recently moved from cages to an indoor aviary with three solid walls. In the aviary, the finches are much more relaxed and comfortable. The roof and most of the front wall of the aviary is made of 1/4 inch hardware cloth. The front wall is built with two cabinet hinges at the top which allow the entire front wall to open by swinging upward. Opening the wall this way would only be for doing a thorough cleaning or perhaps to replace or add plants and other items to the aviary. The lower part of the front is equipped with two small doors made of 1/8 inch thick wood panels. These doors allow for frequent food and water changes (or minor cleanup of the aviary floor) with minimal disturbance to the aviary. The reason these doors are made of wood panels rather than hardware cloth is to prevent seeds and feathers from spilling out of the aviary. An improvement would be to make those doors from plexiglass. Although not visible in this video, the aviary floor is covered with vinyl stickon tile to make cleaning easier and prevent water damage to the wood base. The plants are Schefflera arboricola (Heptapleurum arboricolum), also known as Dwarf Umbrella Trees.
