Zeroing your rifle scope means aligning the scope with the barrel so that the crosshairs match where the bullet is going to fall.
Basically, when trying to take out long distance targets, zeroing your rife can help you become way more accurate, though it does take a little more effort.
By default you zero your rifle by holding down left alt and rolling your mouse wheel up or down to adjust the range accordingly when looking down your scope

When zeroing your sniper rifle, you see the range change within your sniper scope.
Once set, you should see a noticeable different in decreased bullet drop.
I really only zero my scope for long distance sniping when the natural bullet velocity begins to drop off or when there are multiple enemies within the same distance.
Finding your targets range can be accomplished by attaching a range finder to your sniper rifle's side rail, if you've yet to unlock it, you can attempt to use the range on the objective markers
